For over 75 years, the white poppy has symbolized the belief that there are better ways to resolve conflicts than through the violence of war. It is a reminder to consider our social values and habits which lead our countries to make continuing violence a likely outcome.
For this cover, I started with a soft red wool fabric, upcycled from a thrifted blazer. The poppy appliqués are made from felted wool from a wool/cashmere sweater, with vintage button centres, glass seed beads stitched in place, and freehand embroidery stems. The cover is interfaced to provide a light stiffness. Handbound with cotton embroidery floss using a longstitch binding; this book opens flat for writing.
The inside is filled with 112 pages (counting both sides) of handmade paper in creamy soft white with petal and greenery inclusions, with a soft deckled edge on all sides. Each section of pages is wrapped with a sheet of a rich red handmade paper, adding 28 more sides to write on! This handmade paper is made by a local company, Botanical Paperworks, and is extremely high quality. Because each sheet of paper is handmade, the thickness may vary slightly from page to page. Your secrets will be kept safe with a button closure: simply pull the elastic loop over the vintage button.
This journal measures 17 x 14.5 cm and 4.5 cm thick (6.75 x 5.75 x 1.75”).
