"Gulf Shores Moonlight"
Acrylic on stretched canvas
2" x 3" (5.1 x 7.6 cm)
I like to paint en plein air (outdoors in natural light) even at night in sometimes strange conditions. This painting was inspired by a supper view from the beachside outdoor deck of a cafe on the Gulf Coast. The sun was setting and the moon rose while we lingered at our table listening to live music, enjoying the ocean breeze and watching people stroll by on the beach. The evening revealed a full moon which made it even more special, and it was one of those nights where there was a colorful fuzzy haze around the full moon. All the colors were reflected in the water, including some pink and purple. I sketched out the scene at the table while we lingered and made some little paintings from those sketches and photos.
