The tension between the barrette and hair stick will hold it securely without pulling your hair. Flex the barrette by pinching the ends together to make space for thick hair.
This design comes from a book called “The Arts of the Sailor; Knotting, Splicing and Ropework” It is used to make a ladder-step mat for better traction on a boat and it is normally made out of old rope.
