Branch Silhouette is a solar etching printed on oriental paper that I made in my studio. The paper is made from cooking and then beating gampi inner bark into a pulp and then forming sheets on a mold. The photograph was taken off of my balcony in the Austin Hill country. I was sitting drinking a cup of coffee admiring a stormy sky, when suddenly the light shifted and this branch was magically illuminated.
I laminated two sheets of handmade paper in the etching process to highlight the sheerness of the paper and give it depth. I also monotyped a blue gradiant on the back to add a slight bit of color to a black and white image. The picture showing the print blowing in the wind shows how delicate and thin the paper is. The last two details show the multple layers.
I hope you like it. This is one of my all time favorite images. So simple. Nature making it's own caligraphic statement. ; )
