Start your own unique Koivu Birch Collection with this handsome vase that will impress men and women alike. It makes a perfect wedding gift, offering the newly wed couple a wish of strong roots into their future.... It also makes a great Father's Day gift. Why not create a great masculine display, by arranging brancheswithin it?

This sturdy upright raku birch vase has many male fans due to its solid structure. It sits tall and handsome on a table just like a birch tree in the forest.

Oh, but there IS a woman behind this one…The source of inspiration for this handsome vase is the beautiful Koivu - which is the Finnish name for Birch, my favorite tree of the forest and a part of every Finn’s soul. No wonder that Silver Birch is Finland's national tree!

I find birch trees to be the most feminine trees of the forest: Birch - the strong, powerful woman of the forest that protects birds and people. In Finland / Lapland, each house tends to have at least one Birch tree in their yard, as if protecting the house whilst the wind howls and the snowstorms rage. There are countless birch trees in my yard. Hence, the name for my collection is the Koivu Collection.

This vase design is the first piece I designed as part of the Koivu Collection in 2001. It was for an art exhibition that toured around the National Parks of Lapland in Finland. The vase was discovered by the Photo Editor of the National Geographic Traveler magazine during her travels in Finland and was featured in the September 2008 issue of the magazine. (See the final image).

The Koivu collection brings warmth to your home; a piece of nature for everyday life.
Each vase has its own unique crackles, because it is raku fired. Please allow for differences from the one pictured. That is the magic of Raku!

{Disclaimers}
Please note that the photo that displays 3 vases is simply for demonstration purposes only and to show a collection of the vases together. The price listed is for ONE Koivu Birch Raku Vase only. The vase has been treated to hold water, but as with all raku products, it is not food safe.

{Raku}
The product is made from clay and fired in a ceramic oven and then glazed with my “Koivu” glaze. I do the raku firing outside in the harsh elements of Lapland's nature. After quickly reaching a temperature of about 1000 degrees Celsius (1800 Fahrenheit) the product is then placed in a tin container filled with wood chips or pine twigs that catch on fire. The thermal shock causes cracklings that become black with the smoke. Finally it is dipped in cool water or snow as we have a lot of that on hand in Lapland! This sets the final design for the network of cracklings characteristic to raku, making each item a one of a kind piece.

{Story}
The name of my collection is “Koivu” which means birch in Finnish. Birch trees are very important to Finns. Almost every family has their own "Home Birch" in the yard, which "protects" the family standing still while the wind blows and snowstorms rage. The leafy, fragrant boughs of the birch trees have many uses. In the summer they are displayed like flowers in a vase and larger branches are made into trellises for weddings and other celebrations like the Midsummer Solstice. Finns also use the aromatic young birch branches to gently whisk themselves with in the sauna, which has a relaxing effect on the muscles and an exfoliating effect on the skin.
