The story of Persephone is one of the best-loved Greek myths.
Persephone was the only child of the union of Demeter (the Goddess of the bountiful harvest) and Zeus (the mighty King of the Olympians) long before his marriage to the Goddess Hera. When she approached womanhood, her beauty and childlike innocence attracted the God Hades, brother of Zeus and King of the underworld. When Zeus gave him Persephone's hand in marriage, Hades simply abducted her from a field of wildflowers near her home and took her to his Underworld kingdom where he made her his Queen. Although the young Goddess grew to love Hades, she remained lonely for her mother Demeter and the life she had known on earth.
Demeter had heard Persephone's screams when Hades grabbed her, and immediately began an intensive search. When she learned how Zeus had betrayed their daughter, she was consumed by grief and sorrow. In retaliation, Demeter withheld her harvest blessings from the earth, demanding Persephone be returned to her. This caused horrible droughts and the earth to become barren; mankind faced a catastrophic famine. Zeus relented and sent the God Hermes to bring the young Goddess home.
Although Persephone missed her mother horribly, she had also grown rather fond of the God Hades and was enjoying her role as Queen of the Underworld. While preparing to leave the Underworld with Hermes, Persephone accepted a pomegranate from Hades. She knew that eating while in the Underworld would prevent anyone from leaving, even a Goddess -- but she went ahead and ate six pomegranate seeds anyway.
Her decision prevented her full restoration to Demeter, but allowed Hermes to negotiate an agreement on her behalf between Hades and Demeter. Persephone would stay with Hades in the underworld for six months each year (Fall and Winter) and would return above ground to her mother the remaining months (Spring and Summer). The Goddess Persephone joyfully reunited with her mother and each year as she leaves to join her husband and King in the Underworld, the Goddess Demeter begins to grieve, bringing on the failing days of Autumn and the cold, barren days of Winter. When Persephone returns from the Underworld, she brings Spring and its verdant growth into Summer in her wake.
Thus did six delicious pomegranate seeds establish our four seasons.
