ARGILLITE (purple) is a fine-grained sedimentary rock composed mainly clay particles and are basically muds and oozes which have hardened into stone. They contain different silt-sized particles and grade into shale. I use what is referred to as purple argillite. This material only occurs at a place in Flemington, NJ, and is Triassic in age, where there was a volcanic intrusion that caused it to be “cooked” and in the process hardened by the silica present and causing white pieces of probably feldspar to form a very attractive finished stone that we cut and set and to my knowledge are the only ones who do so. This material was also used by Native Americans to make tools and points.
