In the past, skilled artists and performers were invited into the forbidden palace to perform in court, but this created a risk of assassins in disguise. There was also a problem with performances being too suggestive for the conservative traditions of the noble family. With the dawn of the steam dynasty, almost all court performers have been replaced by steam powered dolls.

Court Band was created March 2010 by James Ng using pencil, charcoal, ink, Photoshop, and Corel Painter. The print is on B4 (approximately 14" by 10") coated paper and was printed in Hong Kong under the artist's personal supervision.

The original sketch James made when creating Court Band included a dancer but, alas, she didn't make the final cut.

James Ng (pronounced Ing) is a fast rising young artist currently residing in Hong Kong. Recently out of art school, James already has so many commissions that he is working around the clock and barely has time to collect the numerous awards his work is earning.

"The Chinese Steampunk series is a personal project where I try to merge Imperial Chinese designs and history with western steam works, the English Industrial Revolution and fantasy."
