About This Image:

I grew up in a big East Coast city. Nature, as I know it now, was not exactly something I was able to partake of daily. When I moved to Oregon 15 years ago, I settled in a small coastal town and I was completely inundated with being right in the midst of so much to experience right outside my door.

East or West coast, birds have been in my blood always. From the blue jays, sparrows and cardinals in those childhood seasons I came to this place and discovered such new, LARGE feathered wonders awaiting me. Blue Herons, red tailed hawks, ravens and egrets became instant obsessions and, luckily, I had them around a lot.

As for the Herons, I can't say exactly why but they are something quite special to me. They are a definitive symbol of the magic and lure of the freedom of flight in my imagination. Of our own eternal longing to fly. They are so large. So awkward and graceful all at once. Their wing beat as they move across the sky is so slow. . . it's almost as if they should not have the gift of flight in their strange bodies. . . but ohhhhh they do.

This image started the long and winding thought process for an entire series of s far more abstract, mixed media styled series that I later created and which is available here as well.

For now, this image speaks volumes about how I feel about these beautiful creatures and the dream of flight. Of how much I love creating the impossible in my own work. . . and in life.

It's not necessary to hold tight to this so-called reality
The mystery does not always need to have answers
Science is lacking in it's charms anyway
Knowing too much is always a weight upon the soul

Once, we drew the plans for airships and
Mythic, winged creatures filled the margins of our notebooks
The red, vertical line a boundary no one dared to cross
We dreamed and doodled every possibility
We were better for that innocence
We were
Better

And now we look back at those same, red lines
Standing here on what is supposed to be the usable part of life's pages
Pages we fill with urgency and to-do lists
We fill with hellos and goodbyes
We fill with budgets and breakdowns
We've forgotten how to hold on to a dream
We've forgotten the way back
We've forgotten and grounded
All of these
Mythic
Impossible
Winged
Dreams~
