"Every day, after lunch and before Home Ec, I stared at the solar system. It wasn't that I was particularly interested in the finer details of the universe, but the poster happened to be taped, slightly crookedly, directly across from my assigned seat. So I stared. I think the first time I saw it I actually read the planetary names, their distance from the sun and the earth, their moons, and so forth. After that I only perceived a pattern of variously sized circles.
For a full school year, the planets became a resting place for my 12 year old eyes as I contemplated the fascinating and often horrifying events taking place on my own planet. My stomach slightly satiated from a daily ration of half a sandwich and a small carton of milk, I wondered about the children in Europe whose daily lessons were interrupted by air raids. Looking at those celestial objects I questioned if Amelia Earhart had really died like the radio men said, or if she was on a sunny island eating tropical fruit. While gazing at Mars and half listening as my teacher explained how clouds were formed, I replayed my favorite scenes from the most recent I had seen in in the theatre: 'The Wizard of Oz' .
In 1939 it was difficult for me to grasp what was happening around me. Nothing seemed safe. Any day had the potential for a military attack, for a shortage of food, for my hero to disappear, and for moving pictures to unexpectedly change from black and white to Technicolor. With the world rapidly changing around me, I found solace and comfort knowing that there were questions to which scientific explanations could be given. So every day, after lunch, I stared at the solar system. "
