DOTKLOK is an open-source, hackable, Arduino-based digital clock that displays a series of unique time-telling animations. The passing of time is depicted with numbers and abstract/geometric patterns such as Morse code and minimal analog clock faces, and includes animations inspired by classic video games such as Pong, Tetris, Pacman, and Space Invaders.

Its minimal style fits with both contemporary and "future retro" decor. Its mix of practical time-telling and aesthetic animations provide a real conversation piece at home or in the office.

A sample of the animations are shown in the listing pictures:

1. big time: a nice big time display

2. game time: each minute, the time is cleared randomly by Pacman, Space Invaders, or falling Tetris blocks (shown w/ a green DOTKLOK available in a separate listing)

3. random dot time: dots randomly fill the screen over 24 hours

4. percent time: percentage of the day passed; one minute is approx. 0.07%

5. basic big time display; shown on a bookcase for scale

There are 14 animations in total, the additional animations are shown at the DOTKLOK webpage: www.technoetc.net/dotklok

MAIN FEATURES

- 14 user-selectable time animations (can be updated as new ones are released*)

- 24/12 hour modes

- "random mode" can switch animations each day at midnight

- 3.75" x 2.5" (10cm x 6.5cm) LED display

- dedicated real-time clock (RTC) chip keeps date/time with backup battery (included)

- 4 button time/display interface + slide switch for mode selection

- UL / CE power supply included

- open-source code can be modified by owners*: eg. change the button functions and add new time animations

- easily re-programmable: software updates can be uploaded with a standard FTDI cable or USB-to-serial cable*

- totally hackable: circuit board has prototype area and all unused Arduino pins are available; add more switches, buzzers, sensors!

The inspiration for DOTKLOK was to combine in one clock a variety of ways to show time — such as with words, graphics, or retro game displays — while providing a platform on which others can further develop unique timepieces.

The 24 x 16 pixel screen makes for a large, clear time display. A simple button interface is used to set the date and time, and to select from the various display animations. When in “random mode” the clock switches to a different animation each day at midnight so that users can experience a “new” clock each day. The stylish, minimal enclosure is made from laser-cut acrylic panels.

DOTKLOK is Arduino compatible, making it easily customized and updated by owners*. A dedicated real-time clock (RTC) chip tracks the time and date even in the absence of power thanks to a small back-up battery. Also, because of the open source nature of the project, DOTKLOK can be re-purposed for other uses altogether, such as a low-fi video game platform.

DOTKLOK is available as a kit or fully assembled, with either a red or green LED screen. All hardware plans, schematics, source code, and assembly + useage instructions are available from the DOTKLOK webpage:
www.technoetc.net/dotklok

The kit comes includes everything needed to build your DOTKLOK -- excluding tools -- all high quality parts and hardware, sourced from industry-leading suppliers. It's easily assembled with beginner's soldering experience since all the electronic parts are through-hole. The entire clock can be put together in a few hours (or as little as 90 minutes for experienced kit builders) by following the illustrated assembly guide.

This listing is for a RED / KIT. Check my other listings if you are looking for a green or assembled DOTKLOK.
