It is highly unusual, and quite interesting, as you can see the artist's tooling and carving marks. Its color is a really beautiful deep auburn reddish-brown, perhaps mahogany. It has been used, but is in wonderful condition - no chips, no cracks. I have not oiled it, but to do so would probably enhance a the color as well as protect and further water-proof the wood.
Since wood does not conduct heat well, this trivet is wonderful for protecting your fine surfaces and table tops. It is really quite useful, as well as a decorative and handsome piece!
