AMSTERDAM ARCHITECTURE SET (5) houses in rustic earthtones.
Pure and minimalist, these clay forms recall the seventeenth-century canal houses of the Dutch Golden Age.
Still standing today just as they did in early art and photography, the terracotta, ochre and white clay houses here in Holland have hosted Dutch modernization for four centuries. The same geometric shapes of light and shadow immortalized by Johannes Vermeer, Jan van der Heyden and Gerrit Berckheyde in their cityscape paintings lay upon the facades and rooflines of these tiny monuments. Each has a beautifully organic surface with lines and curves familiar to those who know The Netherlands.
Each "huis" is handbuilt in my atelier inside my own mid-1600s monumental canal house here in Holland. The clay is a mineral and natural cellulose fiber clay that hardens strongly and naturally. The material is non-toxic and comes from the coastline of Spain.
* This sculpture was featured in the NRC, one of the leading newspapers here in The Netherlands!
