The Coastal Steamer

This little box reminded me the chests used to contain personal belongings that were taken on sea voyages years ago. The coastal steamers were ships that sailed up and down the coast delivering people and goods to small communities and are still in existence today in some areas. It is made of birch wrapped around triangular wooden panels. The wood was stained with Quinacridone Gold watercolour to let the natural patterning show.

The front face of the box was gently laid in natural beach sand and a preserved Atlantic sea star was perched on on the lid, and a tiny sea snail resting on the wooden handle. The closure is elastic, slipping over the snail and button handle. The box measures approximately 5.5"l x 2.5w x 2.75h

Of course, there are always treasures in steamer trunks and inside this one you will find two whelk shells. The shells have been stained in soft muted colours of the sea and have natural hemp hanging loops attached. The shells make wonderful natural decorations for any time of year and are beautiful on a Christmas tree.
