According to the Vintage Fashion Guild, The Carlye Dress Corporation was formed in 1938 in St. Louis, Missouri.
It was one of the great dress houses located in the city that was noted for its junior wear industry. In the 1940s, Margot Kopps McClintock, and Marion McCoy who later had her own label, designed for Carlye. Carlye dresses are some of the best dresses from that era. The cut, fabric, style are amazingly well made. The Carlye Company went out of business before 1967, by Leslie Fay. Carlye dresses are collectible.
The Vintage Fashion Guild shows that the label shown on this dress was made in the 1940's.
Fabulous WWII swing dress in a black crepe rayon with a coral coloured bib as well as a peek-a-boo ruffle at the sleeve hems. The bib is kept in place with snap closures and features black velvet banded bows going across. Coral crepe rayon collar is attached. The sleeves are split on the inner sides with little snap closures and have a punch of coral crepe rayon ruffled at the outer hem. Discreet side zipper. Comes with the original belt. Seams are in good condition.
Dress is in excellent vintage condition. As with any vintage item with this age on it, please take care when putting on and find a professional seamstress that can eventually reinforce the seams. No odors, stains, rips, tears, holes, etc. The ends of the velvet bands on the bib are fraying a tad so recutting them might be in order.
