Possibly dating from the 1950s, the links are marked "SWANK" and "1/40 10K RGP." RGP is a quality mark that means "rolled gold plate," and 1/40 is the ratio of gold to the total weight of the item.
Each cufflink is 1-3/8 inch long, and they are both very well made and in very good condition. The fasteners turn easily and click into position solidly.
The figure-8 knot is often used at the end of a rope to secure it, so this would be a scholar's choice of a gift for someone who loves to sail boats or climb rocks. The intertwined line also makes a beautifully romantic lovers' knot. And don't forget, garnet is January's birthstone!
"When this you see remember me
And love me more & more
This knot when you at distance drew
Came closer than before."
--Thomas Parnell
