In 1775, Phillis Wheatley wrote a poem dedicated to George Washington entitled, “To his Excellency General Washington.”
"Proceed, great chief, with virtue on thy side,
Thy ev’ry action let the goddess guide.
A crown, a mansion, and a throne that shine,
With gold unfading, WASHINGTON! be thine.”
Phillis was an African American slave born around 1753 . She received an extremely good education by her owner's 18 year old daughter Mary Wheatley and showed a wonderful talent for writing poetry. Her talent in writing and poetry is still marveled at today.
Inspired by one of the very few portraits of Phillis, my miniature doll creation is wearing a yellow silk gown styled in 18th century fashion and trimmed in yellow roses. Tiny details of her face are painted by hand, and Phillis carries a feathered quill and writing book.
This historical miniature doll stands a tiny and collectible 4 1/2 inches tall, (11.4 cm).
