I started making butterfly shadow boxes in 2008 as handmade gifts to family and friends for Christmas. I was inspired to make thoughtful, unique and personalized gifts for loved ones, and they were a big hit!

As a graphic designer, I enjoy creating visually exciting compositions that mix color, pattern and texture. That's why I started using recycled magazines and catalogs as raw materials for my shadow boxes. It's important that everything I design is eco-friendly and one of a kind.

Everyone has a unique life story that makes them who they are. A butterfly symbolizes transformation, and that idea reminded me of the changes that we go through as we grow and experience life. I started writing narrative poems to create a "persona" for each shadow box that told a story about growth and change. That's why you'll notice a progression in the colors from bottom to top in all my pieces. The butterflies are turned in all different directions, and some are even outside the box, because our journey isn't always simple. It's a complex adventure.
