Jasper is the stone of the Apostle St. Peter. St. Peter's feast day is June 29th. Leopard Skin Jasper has wonderful spots, somewhat like a leopard. It comes in variety of colors and shades. The name jasper means "spotted or speckled stone." It is a form of chalcedony and is found in many sub-varieties. Jasper is known to have been a favorite gem in the ancient world; its name can be traced back in Hebrew, Assyrian, Persian, Greek and Latin. On Minoan Crete within present day Greece, jasper was carved to produce seals circa 1800 BC based upon archaeological discoveries at the palace of Knossos.
Onyx is the stone of the apostle St. James, messenger to the Virgin Mary. St. James' feast day is July 25th. Pure black onyx is common, and perhaps the most famous variety, but more rare than onyx with banded colors. It has a long history of use for hardstone carving and jewelry, where it is usually cut as a cabochon, or into beads, and is also used for intaglio or cameo engraved gems, where the bands make the image contrast with the ground.
