This item was created from earthenware clay, kiln fired twice to 1900 degrees. All nontoxic, lead free, eco friendly materials were used in its creation. Earthenware clay is a slightly more delicate clay than the types of clay you buy at big pottery stores--like fine china, it will chip if it is bumped against another object. A little extra care in handling will prolong the enjoyment of your item. It is made to be used and enjoyed on a daily basis. It is dishwasher safe as long as you load it carefully, and safe in most microwaves (please test first- some models of microwave may cause the handle to become warm.)
