The cars are made of one solid piece of pine for total unbreakability. They have birch wheels that turn freely, and spots for big and little people to sit (except the family car which has one spot for a big or little person and three spots for just the thinner people). The gas pump is made from hard maple wood with a cotton cord for the gas hose.
The peg people are considered choking hazards, so use your judgment. They are painted with watercolors and finished with polyurethane. They are not chew toys. If you are buying for small children, you can request unpainted people that are finished with oil and beeswax (or unfinished).
[The last picture is my three year old nailing in the axels for the family cars. It's really a family business!]
