Three pieces of hand dyed silk hemp, measuring 18" wide by 14" long
Hue: Rusty terracotta orange
Looking for an eco-friendly fabric with terrific visual and tactile properties? This silk hemp fabric is 60% hemp; 40% silk. Hemp is a bast fiber that can be grown without herbicides or pesticides and is minimally processed. This fabric has not been treated with chlorine bleach, but whitened with safer hydrogen peroxide. No formaldehyde or optic whiteners have been used in its production. I wish I could say the hemp was grown in the U.S., but with the U.S. ban on industrial hemp, nearly all hemp for sale in the U.S. comes from China.
In this fabric, the weft yarn is hemp, while the warp intersect is silk. It has the soft drape of a medium weight silk linen, with a matte finish. This fabric needles easily (more easily than my high threadcount cotton broadcloth) and would be a wonderful element of any fiber arts project.
To create these pieces, I used several shibori techniques, binding the fabric to a pole before dyeing it. The bindings form areas of compression and resist that makes for really interesting patterning. Every piece is unique.
I have washed this fabric thoroughly and tested it for colorfastness. It is preshrunk. This fabric does fray easily, so either wash by hand or in a machine on gentle cycle.
