Inspired by the Cinque Terre's pastel houses perched atop the rocky coast of the Italian Riviera, these clay art objects are but small representations of a place of remarkable beauty. The pastel houses built amidst the jutting cliffs are not reachable by car, but instead show their facades to the Mediterranean Sea.
The pure, natural surface of the clay is retained in these pieces by hand-mixing pigments into the wet clay body itself, rather than painting or varnishing the outside surface. This makes the clay's colors vibrant, while the texture is beautifully raw. Juxtaposed with this raw surface is an occasional glassy side, made by hand-burnishing with a round stone from the sea.
Each house is hand-built and one-of-a-kind. Each clay is hand-mixed using a base clay from the coast of Spain and pigments (of various contents) ground by the Verfmolen de Kat windmill here in Holland. These Dutch pigments are the same types of pigments used by Dutch painters such as Rembrandt and Vermeer of The Dutch Golden Age.
