Collar bars are men's jewelry pieces designed to hold the two leaves of the collar of a dress shirt together and lift and frame the knot of the necktie in between. This provides a subtle touch that marks you as a man of style and lifts you one notch above all the other suits. Wearing one takes just a little attention to detail.
A collar pin (also called collar bar and collar clip) is a piece of men's jewelry that holds the two ends of a dress shirt collar together and passes underneath the knot of a necktie. Functioning in a similar way as a tabbed collar, it keeps the collar in place and lifts the knot to provide a more aesthetically pleasing arc to the necktie.
How to use:
You need to purchase a special type of shirt to wear with the barbell-style collar bar. Shirts designed for barbell collar bars come with sewn-in holes for the bar to pierce. Don't wear the shirt without the collar bar; it looks like the shirt is damaged or something is missing. One end of the barbell screws off. Remove it and slip the open end of the barbell through one hole in the collar from the outside in. Slide the barbell under the knot of your necktie and through the other hole from the inside out. Screw the cap back on the open end of the barbell.
As a classic and elegant accessory, the collar pin is one element that you can add to your suits every now and then when you want to bring a different type of style that owes it roots to the post-War era. Done right, you can’t go wrong, just remember that the tie pin is meant for smaller proportioned collars and tie knots, so proportion is key here as it is with most of menswear.
