The center is a beautiful abalone shell button with swirls of many colors, one of the colors is a lovely mint green that matches the beads in the choker perfectly. I wish the pictures would have been able to show this better, it is so hard to photograph abalone and get the full effect of it's beauty.
The beads are rare old French light sea green 5mm white hearts, a beautiful pale sea green glass core drawn and wound around a white core or “heart”. These beads measure 5mm (1/4") in width side-to-side, but from hole-to-hole they vary from 3mm to 4mm, ranging to the typical flattened "donut" shape, as with most very old beads. The rare light green glass layer has a lovely translucent quality through which light travels and reflects back from the creamy white glass core at the center of these beads... which is why they are known as "white hearts".
French seed beads and pony beads have not been made in many decades... no matter what you have heard! The ONLY French glass seed beads coming into this country for the past several decades had been stockpiled vintage inventory from the last remaining bead factory in France that quit production ages ago. More info below, if you're interested in history...
These beads came from a factory that was founded by a family of Italian beadmakers, who took their trade into France long ago, and began the only seedbead production in the country. They produced French-made beads using the Italian glass formulas. French glass beads are the closest in color and quality to the old Italian beads that were first traded in North America, long ago.
Seed and pony beads made in France are like no other beads in uniqueness of color and quality, rarely sold in the U.S, they're becoming very scarce since production in France came to an end. French beads were made only from the highest quality sand imported from the Sahara Desert to the factory in France. The manufacture process of each color production took around 60 days from start to finish. One of the other unique things about French glass seed beads, other than the rare colors, is that they holes are always big and easy to work with.
Rare 100+ year old Venetian white hearts, uncirculated stock recently released from the Societa Veneziana Conterie of Murano - the Venetian Bead Society - which had stored warehouses of old beads for more than a century. These beads were manufactured in Venice for the early fur trade in America, and for the African trade.
