Persephone was the daughter of the goddess Demeter, the goddess of growing things. Hades, the god of the Underworld, abducted Persephone and carried her off to become his queen. Persephone's mother lamented the loss of her daughter, and refused to let anything grow in her absence. Hades finally agreed that Persephone could return only if she had not eaten or drank while in the Underworld. She had eaten six pomegranate seeds, however, so she had to spend half of the year with Hades and half with her mother - one month for every seed she had eaten. When Persephone emerges from the Underworld, Demeter celebrates her return with Spring.
The verdant color of the azurite stones, nestled in a web of netted fine silver wire represents the green earth, and the six shaded pink tourmaline briolettes represent both the pmoegranate seeds Persephone ate and the pink of the returning flower buds in Spring.
The earrings measure 2 inches in total length, and will arrive in a floral gift box, with the artist's card.
