This necklace is made of waxed cotton, and is tied in adjustable knots for variable length. It is strung with a thick 2 1/4" natural wooden teether. The teether is completely removable-- take it off and let baby play with it at the store, then put it back on for the ride home. (babies shouldn't be allowed to play with the cord unsupervised-- it's long enough to be a strangulation hazard). Always supervise your baby while he or she is playing with these necklaces! Please check for cracks, splinters, or frayed cords before every use, and if anything is not in pristine condition discontinue use immediately. I use very heavy-weight waxed cotton cord specifically to withstand harsh baby/toddler handing, *but* materials sometimes break down or are defective, and if the cord is broken or the wood is cracked some of the necklaces contain small parts that could be chocking hazards. ALL of the necklaces contain cords long enough to be a strangulation hazard (longer than 6 inches). These necklaces are intended for baby to handle and gum while teething, toddlers who already have teeth may be able to chew off pieces of the wood. The cords and the beads on these necklaces are intended to be handled, not chewed on, so that they maintain their strength. The buyer/wearer of the necklace assumes all responsibility for baby's safety while it is in use. Nursing/teething necklaces are a very useful, helpful accessory for both moms and babies, but like anything they can be dangerous if not used with caution.
