while i was living in florida, i had many encounters with the great white heron, or egret. this bird has a long S-shaped neck that you can recognize from afar. even though they can make a lot of noise when in a flock, you usually meet only one of them, stoically standing on the roof of your car or in the middle of a swamp, not moving at all for quite a while.
shortly before i left the state, i went to this park nearby where a number of herons had their nests in the tops of the oak trees. i could walk underneath them collecting their feathers while they were having a loud dispute over my head. i came home that day with the backseat of my car covered in heron feathers, and decided when i get to california i had to do a design of this bird.
