The piece represents the fashions of the Roman era, particularly those recorded and preserved in the frescoes of Pompeii. The eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79 destroyed the city of Pompeii, but ironically preserved many of the wall-paintings, which are a treasure-trove of Roman art, fashion, style, and culture. As I crafted this piece of jewelry, it gradually revealed itself to be reminiscent of the fashions I've seen in many Pompeian images.
The necklace consists of a spiral beadwoven rope of opaque white glass seed beads, reinforced with beading wire, finished with a sterling silver clasp and findings, and showcasing a striking Mexican fire agate pendant. The pendant hangs secured from a unique beadwoven bail of pearl-finish white cylinder beads. The pendant stone measures 1.5 inches long, and 1.25 inches wide at its widest point.
