I began to look for examples of symbols in cave paintings and found a fantastic mural by the Chumash native people in southern California that is thought to be a representation of an astrological event, a solar eclipse which occurred on November 24, 1677. I gathered some information on the Chumash people and created this bead embroidered cuff bracelet that I’ve called “Chumash” to honor their legacy. I found some great clay tiles that featured a variety of sunwheel forms and earth spirals. I chose five of the six tiles for the cuff bracelet and the sixth tile featuring the life maze I used to create a pendant necklace.
This bead embroidered cuff features five clay tiles surrounded by peyote bezels using seed beads in rust, pearl luster and matte brown accented with sweet little sparkled goldstone beads. The cuff is encrusted with these seed beads in stripes and swirls mimicing cave painting. The cuff is edged in iris bronze beads and finished with a peyote loop with a jasper pumpkin shaped bead closure. Backed with tan ultrasuede, the cuff measures about 7.75" long and 2.25" wide.
