I threw this small pot on my potters wheel, as a test for some new decorative techniques I'm exploring. It's made from white stoneware clay and is glazed with a clear gloss glaze with an olive green gloss painted along the rim, which feathers nicely into the clear glaze. After firing in the kiln to 2130 F, I added a decal laser image of a sea slug (nudibranchia) from Ernst Haeckel's "Art Forms from Nature", and refired to 1954 F.

The pot was thrown "off the hump", a technique which involves centering a large ball of clay and after throwing a small pot at the top of the mound of clay, cutting it off and throwing more pots from the same mound.

It's small - only 2 3/4" across and 1" tall, but sits very nicely on a small trimmed foot. This is the perfect gift for any science geek you know - a pot with an image of a sea slug is sure to be a big hit with fans of ocean dwelling creatures! Use it to hold very small objects, or just let it sit and attract visitors.

I've been working on a whole series of these pots and will be listing them shortly. You can read my blogpost about it here -
