Metallic silicon is non-toxic and has a beautiful glassy silver finish that will not tarnish, corrode, or oxidize with age. Arrowheads knapped in the modern era, in modern materials such as this, do not risk contaminating the archeological record.
Although it looks a lot like glass, metallic silicon is fairly crystalline in nature and quite difficult to work in this way. The failure rate--pieces that are broken during the knapping process--is about 70%. The raw starting material is in high demand these days, and is difficult to procure in small quantities.
Only three have been made so far. One has sold, two are still available. They are priced, together, to recoup the cost of the small lot of metallic silicon I purchased to begin this project. Individually, they are priced by weight.
This is number 003. It measures 2.2 cm wide and is 3.6 cm long. It weighs 2 grams and is 4mm thick.
