In Greek myth Canis Major, aka the Great Dog, and Canis Minor (the not-so-great dog?) were Orion's hunting dogs. Canis Major was one of the most important constellations in ancient times because the brightest star in the sky is part of it.
Sirius, the Dog Star, is the brightest star in the night sky. Only the Moon and the planets Venus, Jupiter and Mars are brighter.
Canis Major is easy to find November through March. Just locate Orion the Hunter, which dominates the winter sky, and imagine a straight line through his belt. Follow the line to the southeast, and you will see Sirius perched right below it.
