All three strands run through a sturdy sterling silver split ring, from which hangs a hammered, silver-plated steel ring attached by a silver-plated bail. I've attached several unique cascading collections of beads to the ring with sterling silver wire, including faceted quartz crystal, faceted aurora-borealis coated Chinese and Swarovski crystals, and one beautiful hand-faceted moonstone.
This necklace measures about 17 inches clasped, with another 2.5 inches for the focal.
It's Only Forever was created for a themed Team Challenge for April: "Diamonds and Raindrops." I wanted to use white, transparent and silver tones in the spirit of the theme, but as I was working, the focal ring and the thought of diamonds had me thinking about engagements and commitments, too. The sparkling white and frosted quality of the beads led me to remember the movie Labyrinth, one of my favorites as a little girl with an overactive imagination, and the sparkling white dress that Sarah wore in the ballroom scene. Even years later, I still remember the words to the soundtrack song "Underground" (sung by the ever-gorgeous David Bowie): "It's only forever, not long at all."
