Attention owners of those lovely open concept homes with huge wall spaces! This is a large wall quilt!
I love those little paper parasols you get in a fancy cocktail. I designed this quilt around a bunch of these. Each parasol is pieced and appliqued onto the background. You can see the seam lines through the fabric which looks like the cardboard spines on the paper parasols.
The flowers and designs are painted on using fabric paints and Jacquard Dye-Na-Flow products.
To fill in some of the background I wanted to use rain. I fused Angelina fibers and cut them into rain drops. Before I attached them I was thinking about fortune cookies. How could I incorporate those? I got a box of fortune cookies and as I was studying them and drawing them, my kids and I were eating them... the whole box.
Then it hit me! Use the fortunes! So I applied a sealer to the messages because the ink runs very easily. Then inserted them behind the rain drops.
Hence, Instant Messages. ;)
The quilting is quite heavy on the parasols in order to imitate the crinkly paper. The sky is mostly stipple quilted with hints of a breeze.
Great for Spring and Summer decor for a large wall.
Parasols 1 is very similar to this quilt, though smaller and no rain or messages.
