I titled this piece "Cara Bella", a Spanish endearment which translates into beautiful face. It can also be read as carabela, the Spanish word for skull. The skull represents death and stillness, and the rose with entwined vines represents life and growth - a fascinating contradiction. With my wax carving tools in hand, I immersed myself in the beauty of her face, revealing to my soul that everything is connected. This piece was inspired by the Day of the Dead skulls that are celebrated in the Mexican culture, and the mythological stories that taught me that all emerge from one - and all is beautiful.
Hand carved in wax and cast in sterling silver, with ruby colored stone set in rose and polished to a brilliant finish.
