I have never lost a child but have looked into the window of people's lives who have. Among a myriad of the most powerful emotions I have seen others experience, one of the things that has stood out profoundly to me is need. The need for their children to be acknowledged, celebrated, spoken about. The need to know that others remember.
I would have never imagined that my artwork would take me down this path, but through the evolution of it all I now understand that having something tangible and touchable to express such powerful emotions is a necessary emblem and allows people to cope, accept, and perhaps move closer to healing. I have been told by someone grieving that while every good feeling in the world felt foreign, these simple tiny sculptures were something to relate and brought forth the understanding that feeling inhuman among your emotions is wholly human during the darkest times.
Simple in form, they are the most difficult and most challenging work I have ever done and while a part of me feels lost every time I make one, I also realize that it is a part of me that I am giving away and if it helps someone in some small way, then it will have been worth it in the end.
