I love my sweater coats and desired the perfect accompaniment to them. I desired something that could go anywhere, antiquing, road trips, airplanes or to work. Depends on the carrier! I am taken with the patina of the age on the materials. Something that cannot be duplicated or replicated with new materials. And as always in my work it is the up-cycling of items that otherwise might not get used or see the light of day.
Where to begin...On the outside I started with a sturdy fabric, overlaid it with hand dyed crochet. On the gusset I used a sturdy carpet-y long pile vintage velvet in a dark pink that has the faintest of roses printed on it. I then added antique velvet and trims. I chose only Victorian, Edwardian and Deco trims for the main parts, adding loop fringe and hand dyed tassel trim. Then added hand dyed velvet roses in deep rose and green/browns and a vintage brooch. The opening is trimmed out with vintage hand crocheted and dyed doilies. The strap is strong and sturdy, covered with a vintage rose cut velvet. designed to carry weight. The inside is fully lined with a sturdy vintage rose design barkcloth-ish fabric. Every seam is covered with hand sewn satin and velvet. I added 4 interior pockets. whew! It took about 40 hours to make this because of all of the hand work. I wanted to make something that was beautiful from the inside out and from every angle! The tops of the gusset snap to expand if needed and the closing also has a heavy duty snap closure.
The front and back panels are about 22 inches across, the sides are about 8 inches deep and from top to bottom of the bag is about 14 inches. The strap is 42 inches, so when it is over your shoulder or slung over your neck, you can get your hand in to the bottom of it. I have more photos of it on my facebook, check out Sunspiralautumn! Thanks so much for looking
