It seems highly improbably that the marble-like buds of a peony could explode into such a complex, frilly, glorious flower, but peonies are spectacular when their buds do just that. This one was in a garden in Rome, and it was larger than my hand. The original watercolor was painted on cold-pressed watercolor paper.
