Since this is my favorite novel, several topics emerged........difficult to select one. I finally decided on "The Dead Marshes", found in "The Two Towers" part.. This area of "land" was the battleground where Sauron was first defeated. Now marshes only remain...........a malevolent enchantment by the Dark Lord.

Led by Gollum, Frodo and Sam must make their way through stagnant marshes without falling prey to the sinister dead who who may by seen beneath the murky water. Still clad in their armor, thousands of dead warriors-Men, Elves and Orcs lie beneath the surface of the marshes. All around are flickering flames which tempt the wanderer of the safe path deep into the bog. As Gollum says " Tricksy lights! Candles of corpses! Wicked lights!" " You must not look at them when the candles are lit."

To exemplify the wandering in the marshes, I chose to use primarily free form peyote stitch, with herringbone arrows attached throughout the necklace. The matte palate represents the marshes, shiny metalic beads & arrows symbolize the soldiers, and splattered throughout are orange swarovski crystals; reflecting the flames. Just as there are many paths one could take as well as get lost if wandering, so this is true with the free form style. Take some time to view the various photos, displaying close up detailed stitching.

When one studies the intricate work within the lamp work focal, it encompasses the marshes.
