This choker necklace was created for the May Challenge of the Beadweavers on Etsy, following the theme of the J.R. Tolkien "Lord of the Rings" Trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring, Two Towers, & Return of the King.
My inspiration for this necklace came from the “One Ring”, the artifact that appears as the main factor of the central plot. It is described in an earlier book, The Hobbit as a magic ring of invisibility. The sequel, The Lord of the Rings, describes its powers as being much more encompassing than invisibility, and states that the Ring is in fact powerful and malevolent. The Lord of the Rings concerns the quest to destroy the Ring, which was created by the primary antagonist, Sauron.
At first glance the Ring seems to be made simply of gold, it bears no precious gems, but there is much more for the eye to see. Its identity could be determined by a little-known test: when placed in a fire, it displayed a fiery inscription in the Black language of Mordor.
Before deciding on the color combinations for this necklace, I considered what the One Ring represented in addition to the brilliant gold color it possessed. The Ring demonstrated a relentless passion for power, war and wicked violence yet with a sense of strength and leadership. It went into the wearer’s soul and conjured up conflicting emotions and temptations. It took the pits of volcanic lava to destroy it.
I wanted to capture these characteristics and so I choose reds and oranges to surround the center gold beads, as though the power of the gold ring is controlled by its own fate, the destruction in the fires of Mount Doom. Red is often known for representing great power, anger, hot temperatures, etc. Remember the saying, “Seeing Red”? The oranges reference the flames in which the One Ring is finally destroyed. Finally, I choose a spiral stitch symbolizing the circular shape of the One Ring.
This necklace also has accents of copper, brass and browns to complement the reds and gold’s. This piece is hand-woven with Fireline for added strength and durability.
