The upcycled wooden oil lamp holder is about 3 1/2 inches across and just over 3 inches high. It is made from a section of elm branch. It's bark is intact and I saturated the entire piece with walnut oil to preserve it after sanding the top and bottom surfaces. This has left the wood with a nice smooth satin finish on the flat surfaces and has brought out the colors in the bark. See the photo of the top surface to view the lovely patterns in the bark cross section.
The mini oil lamp is about 1 1/2 inches in diameter and about 2 inches high, not including the wick. The reservoir will hold enough oil (not included) for about two hours of light. To reduce smoking, keep the wick short and use a high grade lamp oil. The last photo shows the oil lamp components included with the wood oil lamp holder. (Open flames should not be left unattended or within the reach of children.)
In managing my small bit of acreage with an eye to providing wildlife habitat and good land use, it becomes necessary from time to time to trim or remove trees on the property to alleviate overcrowding or clean up storm damage. After trimming, I look for portions of the timber that had to be removed that have potential to be OOAK wood decor or jewelry items in order to recycle and reduce the amount of material that needs to be hauled off. I then cure these sections as needed prior to working with them.
