This 24" tall uncle Sam doll is made of muslin and soft sculpted. He has a large, well defined nose (all hand stitched) and mouth. His arms and legs are wired with aluminum wire and he's stuffed with polyester fiberfill. His fingers are needle sculpted. He's been painted with acrylic paints and his blue/gray eyes are done with acrylics and oils. His hair and beard are clean raw wool from Cotswold sheep raised right here in Wisconsin. It's invisibly stitched in place and I styled it with needle felting.
Sam wears red and white striped pants that are hemmed. His lined jacket is made of navy blue homespun fabric and has 8 metal buttons sewn to the turned back lapels. The vest is cotton flannel with pale yellow stars printed on the darker golden yellow fabric. His hat is made of the same fabric as the jacket (brim and hat top) and pants (the stovepipe). It's stuffed with polyester fiberfill to help it hold it's shape.
The tricycle was purchased and is made of rusty look metal with a wood seat and wood handle grips. The wheels do turn. Sam is SEWN--not glued-- to the bike. I've stitched the bottoms of his feet to the center piece on the pedals. There is a tiny hole drilled through the hand grips on the handle bars and his hand is stitched there. I've drilled 2 small holes in the wooden seat under his "butt" and wired him to the seat. Non of these attachments are visible without a close examination of the piece.
The piece measures as follows. It's 20 1/2" high from the table top to the top of his hat. It's 10" wide from knee to knee. It's 12 1/2" long from the outside of the back wheels to the tip of the toe on his forward foot. I've signed the piece "designed and made with love, Lucy" on the back of his neck just under the edge of his hair. He's also dated.
