This plate is one of my prototypes for a new series I'm calling "Tribute to Portlandia."
If you saw the sketch in the TV show Portlandia where one character says to another, "In Portland, you can put a bird on anything and call it art!" you will know what I'm talking about.
If you don't, you still might think this is funny.
This hippo, no matter what his opinion of the bird riding on him, is perfect for everyday use—to hold your toast, your sandwich, or your kid's dinner.
I make the woodcut beast and bird by brushing on a dark slip, tracing around my drawing, and then freehand carving. Then, I go back in handpaint in the colored background with underglaze, giving it a painterly printed look.
The surface of the plate is slightly bumpy as a result of the carving. But it is food, oven, and dishwasher safe.
Each back is signed with the title "Tribute to Portlandia Series."
PLEASE NOTE DIMENSIONS: 7 1/2” roughly square.
