Estimated value: $80
I originally had these listed as “ RARE 1987 Super Circus MARX Re-Issue Twelve Figure Set from American Plastics “ and one of the largest Marx collector’s in the world contacted me and politely informed me that these appear to ALL be from just the Jungle Jim set made by Marx and re-issued by American Plastics in 1987.
The king of toys, the Marx toy company, ceased to exist as Marx starting in 1986 when American Plastics bought the rights and molds of all Marx toys remaining at the Glen Dale plant. The 1950s Super Circus and the Jungle Jim toy sets were two of the most successful toys sets ever sold by Marx or anyone.
In 1986, American Plastics bought the molds and rights to the Marx company. Shortly thereafter, the company began re-issuing certain sets in the form of bagged plastic toys. A mom-pop store in northern Ohio bought several cases of the new Marx toys and they were shipped to one of their storage locations. The cases were not discovered until last year (2010) and I made a deal for them in the fall of 2010. It has taken me about 6 months to find that these were re-issues of Super Circus AND Jungle Jim sets. These appear to be JUST the Jungle Jim set animals. The real tell was the elephant and the double-hump Camel.
They made 12 designs and each with 6 colors and they are all unmarked. They were made in the USA and the Super Circus designs are very detailed while some of the Jungle Jim designs are a little less detailed. Both types are nice.
You are buying the ONE SET of 12 animals as described in the title and shown in the photographs.
Most of these are roughly 1 to 1.25 inches long. The giraffe is roughly 1.5 inches tall.
The list here shows the design and the original set that design came from (some animal designs were in BOTH sets in the 1950s):
# DESIGN
1 Giraffe
2 Bear
3 Lion
4 Elephant
5 Hippo
6 Tiger
7 Lioness
8 Horse
9 Panther
10 Wild Board
11 Gorilla
12 Camel
Random mix of colors. A SUPER-SET of all the colors in ALL the animals would consist of SIX Full Sets (72 animals) and that would be Book Value of $300.00. I may be able to create one of these sets for $200.00 but you need to contact me and we can discuss it.
