White Columbine Flower beautifully hand painted on a sapphire blue glass Hummingbird feeder.

A hummingbird feeder can be one of the most rewarding wild bird feeders to have in a backyard for bird watching.

The rewards far outweigh the effort.

There is more effort in maintaining feeders to hold hummingbird food than any other feeder for attracting wild birds. But it is also the least expensive to fill.

Hummer feeders will attract many other critters too, other than what they are designed to attract. There are a host of other birds who love to have a taste of this sweet nectar from time to time.

A hummingbird feeder is most often entirely made of plastic, but glass is becoming very popular as the syrup holder because of the many benefits.

The advantage of glass or metal is that they are easier to keep clean. Glass syrup holders provide a little insulation from the sun compared to plastic. They last longer because they are made of elements that don’t break down as quickly.

These little birds will drink nectar from a variety of flowers. One bird may visit 1000 flowers per day!

They will snap up the bugs from flowers they visit; from mid-air; and from spider webs, (with the spider too!). The bugs supply the protein they need to balance their diet.

2) Boil 1 cup of water.

3) Stir 1/4 cup of white granulated sugar into the 1 cup of heated water.
