This pattern is a duplication of a pair of booties that a friend of mine showed me. The originals were knit from naturally white merino wool with little silk ribbons and were made by her mother in England before they took the ship to America to rendevous with her father. I love to imagine her mother knitting them up in England and to imagine my friend wearing them on her little pink kicking feet on the ship as they came over. The originals have tiny name tags sewn into the backs with small hand stitches....I expect to keep things squared away in the communal shipboard washroom.
I have reconstructed the pattern and show pictures of both versions. These booties are knit flat and then sewn up the back. I used a fingering weight merino with size 0 needles at a gauge of 8/inch. Most sock yarns would work for these and you would require very little. I estimate you would need 100 yards or less to make a pair.
