Macclesfield was then at the centre of Britain's silk industry and was one of the world's foremost producers of finished silk. Today a handful of mills still operate.
A red white and blue range was obviously designed to cater for all tastes - in this case, an oriental design. A central royal blue motif is flanked by geometric oriental flowers and a trellis border.
Would make a perfect gift in this year of Royal celebrations!
The handkerchief measures a generous 13.5" square.
It is in mint condition from unused shop stock - probably a salesman's sample and is of obvious quality despite its age. One corner bears the label "A Sylqueena Production - Macclesfield Print - Pure Silk".
It comes suitably packaged in a handmade envelope bearing a crown on a regal blue background which I have taken from the original packaging (which does not wear its years as well as this hanky!) Union Jack tissue paper comes as standard!
