The quilt is one in a series of “stencil quilts” that I have designed and created. The technique involves creating two patchwork quilt tops, sewing the layers together along the lines of a stencil, then cutting out the top layer to reveal the stencil beneath. I was inspired by an antique quilt whose well worn top began to disintegrate, revealing and even older and more worn quilt inside that had been used as batting or stuffing.
The pink unicorn is a patchwork of triangles from thirteen different pink prints, while the background is a grid of pinwheel blocks sashed in off-white solid cotton fabric.
The reverse of the quilt is a crinkly soft off-white solid fabric (Kauffman Kona Crush) with a meticulously pieced pink circle and ivory sashing. The batting used in this quilt (the quilt “filling”) has a low loft and gives this quilt a light and summery feel.
The quilting highlights the shape of the appliqué and forms a continuous spiral around the unicorn. On the solid quilt back, the subtle shape of the unicorn makes a surprising counterpoint to the bold pink circle.
The Pink Unicorn Quilt comes with a hand sewn label on the back that can be customized for a small charge.
Quilt is made of cotton and linen fabric (a few pinwheels are linen, the rest is cotton.
Batting is Warm and Natural cotton batting.
This quilt is machine pieced, quilted and bound. I sewed the applique several times while piecing and quilting for durability, and the quilt can be gently machine washed and dried.
