Ship Captains purportedly built homes at the 100 Block of Prince Street in Alexandria Virginia. "Captain's Row" still feels like the early 1800s, with its rough cobblestone street tumbling down toward the Potomac River where the tall ships docked. The brick rowhomes and their dormers and chimneys rise like random organ pipes, roughly following the slope.

The former Bank of the Old Dominion (occupied by the Union Army during the Civil War) is now the Athenaeum, a place for the arts. A perfect example of a Classical Revival temple, the Athenaeum is like a hinge, anchoring Captain's Row at the crest of the hill.
